The four spots that catch learners out

Every test centre has a handful of junctions that come up again and again. Around Tolworth, these are the ones we drill specifically:

• Hook Junction. Where the A3 meets the A243 and A309 a couple of miles south of Tolworth — multiple lanes merging at speed, and easy to get caught in the wrong one if you haven't practised it.
• The Scilly Isles. A genuine double roundabout on the A307/A309 near Hinchley Wood, between Esher and Kingston. It's a well-known local landmark for being awkwardly laid out — the lane discipline through it trips up even confident drivers the first few times.
• Claygate. Narrower village roads, including The Avenue, where speed limits drop and hazard awareness matters more than raw driving skill.
• Long Ditton. Quieter residential streets near the Portsmouth Road corridor — deceptively easy-looking, but exactly where an examiner will check you haven't switched off after a busy main road.
